DETROIT, MICHIGAN is the 11th largest DMA in the country. With a large, but unreported Canadian audience across the border, Detroit’s actual DMA is no doubt larger than attributed. One great trivia fact about Detroit is that you have to drive south from there to reach Canada. The city is home to the Detroit Pistons (NBA), the Detroit Lions (NFL), the Detroit Tigers (MLB) and the Detroit Red Wings (NHL).
Live music has dominated Detroit's night life since the late 40s signified by the long-term residency of John Lee Hooker. Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records which produced hit after hit during the 60s and 70s from artists such as Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and more. At the same time Alice Cooper, Ted Nugent, Mitch Ryder, Glenn Frey and Bob Seger were putting out high enery motor city rock n roll. In the late 80s, Detroit gave birth to the Techno music scene by way of musicians including Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson. Detroit also was a vanguard of garage rock in the 90s and Detroit Hip Hop went huge with Eminem, Kid Rock, Street Lord'z, Slum Village, and others. It's altogether appropriate that the birthplace of Motown has it's share of music venues, and the city does not disappoint with place like: Proof, Cliff Bell's, Half Past Three, Osio, Leland City Club, Envy, V, Fox Theatre, Magic stick, Majestic Theatre, Old Miami, St Andrews Hall, Fillmore and Lager House to name a few.
If you live in Detroit, and are caught up in the music scene, and dream of a career in the music business, RECORDING CONNECTION will help you get there. RECORDING CONNECTION is the mentor apprentice approach to Recording School. Not only do we teach you recording and music theory, we train you in actual hands-on music recording skills in a real Detroit recording studio (like HARMONIE PARK MUSIC) working on a real album or commercial production. You'll learn how to really use Pro Tools and Reason from a master. In fact, one of our mentors is Billy Flores, the live sound for Eminem, Black Eyed Peas, Rolling Stones, BB King and more. RECORDING CONNECTION's Music School is the most successful in the country in placing graduates in the music and recording industries. The reason for this is simple, RECORDING CONNECTION provides its students with real world job experience as well as real industry connections. The old Catch-22 of you can’t get the job without experience and you can get the experience without the job no longer applies. The other truism “It’s who you know” is also solved. Experience and Connections—these are the RECORDING CONNECTION Edge.

Last week I learned all about MIDI. I was able to play around with a MIDI controller at the studio and see how it works. I was
pretty familiar with it because I have one at my home studio. I learned more about how it works so that was cool. What's great about this program is that you learn one on one. No classrooms. No dumb teacher. Just you and a real engineer. Pro Tools is next.
This week was lesson 14 and I had a graded drill. I recieved an A and starting to feel alot more comfortable with digital and analog
consoles. I also was able to apprentice this week for a couple hours recording a band that was playing in Detroit's Thanksgiving Parade, which was fun because these guys could rock it. Only a few more weeks left and I wish it wasn't going by so fast. This experience is like no other.

Recording
Connection student Erik, says we're cool. When he expressed an
interest in learning how to mic drum sets, his mentor brought in a drum
kit and then busted out every mic in his safe so Erik could test
them side by side. Try doing that in a classroom!
