What is Logic Pro X?
Considered the “creative” operating system, the Apple entry into the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) landscape offers a lot to the professional music producer. Some of the biggest names in the digital music industry, including Hardwell, Akon, marshmello, and T-Pain have used the Mac-produced software to create music known around the world.
DAWs have become synonymous with rap or EDM acts for decades but are becoming standard gear for nearly every genre. Whether it’s country, western, pop, or rock, Logic Pro X and DAWs give engineers, producers, and musicians the versatility to create the music they want. Pop stars like Ed Sheeran, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Adele, or their producers, have all worked with Logic Pro.
Digital Audio Workstations
Nearly 40 years ago, the arrival of the Roland TR-808 drum machine signaled the start of a musical upheaval. Met with mild appreciation – even disdain – from established music production houses, the TR-808 thrived on the streets. By the end of the 80s, the biggest names in hip hop used a drum machine on their tracks.
In the 90s computers, hardware, and software became accessible to the masses. Many tools of the trade found in an audio studio – drums, keyboards, soft synths, hi-hats – were replaced by electronic versions found in sample packs or plug-ins. The digital audio workstation was born, turning bedrooms into sound studios around the world.
What Does Logic Pro X Offer?
At first glance, the $200 price tag for Logic Pro X seems a little daunting, especially for the beginner. In addition to the software, users will also need to have a computer with a fast processor and enough storage to run Logic Pro. But if you’re already in the biz, or are ready to upgrade, Logic Pro is one of the best.
An Orchestra of Instrument – The latest versions of Logic Pro X offer an unparalleled number of preloaded virtual instruments. Instead of searching the internet for expansion packs, you’ll have plenty of choices to work with right out of the box.
A “Learning” Drummer – Instead of starting with the drums to establish a beat, Logic Pro X has an A.I. drummer. This means while working on melodies or bass, Logic Pro will adapt the drums to match. While this isn’t the preferred method for some producers, it can be a huge time saver and, fyi, you’re free to go back and alter those drums as needed.
Go Loopy with Loops – With more than 7,000 royalty-free loops prerecorded, you can sort by the time signature, key, beat length and more. You can preview the sounds, then drop them in right where you want and see how it sounds.
With Logic, you get all of this for considerably less than the advanced Ableton or Pro Tools versions with the same traditional functionality. The one thing it doesn’t offer? A PC version. But maybe that doesn’t matter to you.
Does it Matter?
Is there a right or wrong DAW? Of course not. Hip hop producers, DJs, audio engineers, and music producers around the world use a variety of hardware and software. Ableton Live, Pro Tools, and FL Studio (formerly known as Fruity Loops) have all been at the fingertips of some of the biggest names in the business for years.
In reality, most Digital Audio Workstations offer a similar look, feel, and functionality. Consider how a traditional soundboard looks from studio to studio. There isn’t going to be much variation, although some engineers may prefer a certain brand or capabilities. It’s no different in the world of DAWs.
Just like anything else, some people are just drawn to a particular feature of a specific DAW. If you’re creating electronic music and like the way Logic Pro X arranges the instruments for a 32-track song, go with it. Logic Pro also comes with a vast number of samples so go wild!
The key to choosing the right DAW for you comes with understanding why you like one DAW more than the others. As we’ve said many times before, we do not recommend buying the most expensive gear right out of the gate. There are free options for Ableton, Pro Tools, Garageband, Cubase, and others.
While there is no free version of Logic Pro X, you can often find it cheaper as part of an educational bundle from Apple. While other DAWs can be used on a MAC, if you just have to have a Mac product, Logic Pro is your only choice. Still, working up to that point is a good decision.
Call it building a strong foundation, walking before you run, or any metaphor of your choice. Understand what DAWs are used for, how music is woven together, and knowing chords and basic music theory will go a long way to helping you learn how to produce hip hop.
As many of our Recording Connection mentors who are actual in-industry, working music producer and audio engineers have said, the DAW and even the console are just tools. Being a pro comes with achieving the right understanding and having the skillset and agility it takes to meet the needs of the artist — full stop.
If you’ve been researching DAWs and what they offer, you know how many online tutorials, YouTube videos, and social media posts are available to help you learn Logic Pro X – or any other DAW. There are a few downsides to this method of learning: Namely, knowing whether or not you’re learning the correct way and getting quality feedback that’s of a high caliber.
Cut the Learning Curve with a Pro
Recording Connection has been offering audio engineering, music production, and digital audio workstation programs for more than 30 years. However, where 4-year universities or trade schools stop — leaving you miles away from a recording studio — is where we place you from day one.
With Recording Connection Audio Engineering & Music Production, Music Producing, and Live Music programs, you’ll be paired with a mentor, an industry insider. Many of our mentors own their studios and work with local, national, and international acts. Instead of signing up for lab time after class time, we’ve made the pro recording studio your classroom!
We certainly understand why some students decide to take the university route. Maybe it’s what their parents expect, they happen to live in a college town already, or they feel more “book smart” going into an academic setting. But as just about anyone in the music business will tell you, degrees aren’t what matters, skills do!
That’s why we feel the Recording Connection method is so beneficial. Instead of waiting after class to get a teacher to answer your questions, you get one-on-one time with your mentor. Instead of the typical hour a day (or even less), you’ll be expected to spend hours in the studio, soaking up all the information you can.
And your parents can be happy knowing your lessons are curriculum-backed with our industry-oriented, up to the minute eBook curriculums which help you gain the foundational knowledge and enrich your training. There’s quizzes, tests, and a final too! We also offer something else to put a smile on their faces: our tuition is much less than the cost of conventional university or trade school… even many junior colleges!
We offer mentored externships in more than 150 locations throughout the United States, our programs last six to nine months, and we can usually work around your schedule. That means you can stay at home (for now), keep your current job, and not have to move your life a thousand miles away just to start your education in music production and/or audio engineering.
There is one downside though – the Logic Pro Electronic Music Production, Ableton Electronic Music Production, and Audio Engineering & Music Production Programs will make you work. Hard! For many, music is a hobby, a way to kill time on the weekends. For those applying to the Recording Connection, they want to make it a career.
Many of our successful graduates have gotten hired at various recording studios either with their mentors or in other studios. Others have started their own studios, hit the road on-tour, gotten hired at some of the biggest clubs, procured placements, or taken their talents in other directions, such as radio work or even film work. Recording Connection won’t guarantee you a job, that’s just not the way things work. With us, you can get the experience, the connections, and the skills you need to get an edge over the rest. Apply today.
