How To Mute A Track In Ableton

Digital audio workstations(DAW) have made it much easier for people to produce their own music and help give birth to a wide range of different genres and subgenres. While there are a number of DAWs to choose from, there are a few that have positioned themselves as the cream of the crop.

Along with Pro Tools and Logic Pro, Ableton Live is one of the premier names in the DAW marketplace. Ableton offers a free version with limited uses for those looking to learn more about the software as well as more robust options for those looking to take their audio engineering or music production skills to the next level.

While most DAWs have similar views and functionality, there are some nuances between the top names. If you have lots of experience with Pro Tool or Logic Pro, transitioning to Ableton Live shouldn’t be an issue. But you will need to learn some features to become truly proficient with the software.

How to Mute a Track in Ableton

How to Mute a Track in AbletonAbleton Live is a little bit different from other digital audio workstations when it comes to muting a track. For traditional DAWs, you may be used to the M and S buttons, which stand for Mute and Solo. Those are pretty standard for many other DAWs, but Ableton doesn’t have those particular options.

When you want to mute a specific track in Ableton, find the square track activator button associated with that track (they will be numbered) and simply click it. Depending on your view or version of Ableton, the track activator button may be found at the bottom of the screen or in the upper right hand corner.

When the track is live, the button will be yellow. When clicked, it will turn a grayish shade. This only mutes the track, it doesn’t pause the track, so it will continue playing. This process can be used with MIDI tracks, return tracks, audio tracks, and other tracks.

If you can’t see those little yellow boxes, you may need to turn on the mixer view in the arrangement view. This will be grouped with other buttons, such as the input/output (I/O) and the return track ( R ). You may also mute by pressing “0” on your keyboard after choosing a track to mute it.
