Hip Hop & Beat Making
Course 1: Producer Considerations and Arranging

Today’s hip hop producer is often much more than the person in charge of guiding a project. In the context of popular music, the producer can even be the person responsible for the entire arrangement, including the lyrics. As the professional responsible for the construction of the instrumental, you must keep certain musical considerations in mind when aiming at creating an interesting piece of music.

You’ll also uncover certain key aspects during course 1 of the program, such as the difference between the role the producer plays from the role of the songwriter(s). You’ll also get into things to consider when making a song, producing in a rhythmically minded manner, creating the instrumental, and more!

At the end of this course, you will be able to define what an arrangement is, its importance, and other aspects of creating a song. You’ll also begin building a song, starting with an idea and learning different techniques to bring that idea to life. There are a few things you’ll do throughout the program, too, beginning with ear rest/meditation that will prepare you for the task(s) at hand.

You’ll also work on your brand during Market Time–this week will center on choosing colors that represent you. The Digital Field Trip will introduce you to software, apps, gear, and more (watching Hip Hop Evolution on Netflix in this case) while the Listening Library will see you reviewing work from different artists (Doris by Earl Sweatshirt in this course) and how they relate to the course. You’ll finish with a course review, a blog entry, and a quiz.
